International scholarships awarded

Scholars with the Academic RegistrarProfessor Rob Kemp, Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs) at Royal Holloway, University of London awarded 25 overseas scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students from 15 different countries at a celebratory reception on 27 November 2007.

Present at the ceremony, Director of Royal Holloway International, Sheryl Simon commented that ′International students make an enormous contribution to the educational, cultural and social environment on campus and no more so than the recipients of our international scholarships and awards. Royal Holloway is committed to supporting all its students in every way it can′.

Receiving one of the overseas scholarships means a great deal to international students. Scholar Prerna Winter says, ‘The International Excellence Scholarship has been an important element in university life. Apart from the financial support it provides, which as an international student is much appreciated, it is a gesture of encouragement not simply in terms of academic life but also in the development of the self. It drives me to want to do well and give something back to the College community.′

Royal Holloway offers a wide variety of scholarships. The International Excellence Scholarships are awarded to international students who have enrolled for either undergraduate or taught postgraduate degrees. As the name implies, the awards are given to those who are considered academically outstanding and who we anticipate making a significant contribution to the academic life at Royal Holloway. In addition to these awards, Royal Holloway offers scholarships in collaboration with prestigious external organisations. Notable among these are:

• The OSI/Chevening Scholarship scheme run by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Scholarships are awarded to students from Pakistan. Scholarships are available for study in: MSc Democracy, Politics and Governance and MSc Medical Sociology;
• The Overseas Research Student Awards, offered by the UK Government, are made on the basis of outstanding merit and research potential;
